Frequently Asked Questions

When does Hamstra Gardens open for the season?

Hamstra Gardens opens for the season on April 1, 2026. Please check our website or social media for current hours of operation and any schedule updates throughout the season.

Is there an admission fee?

Yes. General admission is $5 per guest.

In past years, there was no admission fee. However, visitor traffic has increased significantly over time. The property was originally community-based and saw very few visitors from outside the area. It was never originally intended to be open for public viewing.

As demand has grown, the impact on the gardens has increased as well. Foot traffic, parking, and general use create significant maintenance needs. The admission fee simply helps offset some of the costs associated with maintaining and caring for the gardens so they can continue to be enjoyed by visitors.

Why has Hamstra Gardens added fees when it was free before?

When the gardens were first shared with the public, visitor volume was much lower and primarily local. In recent years, interest has grown substantially and visitors now come from a much larger area.

We truly enjoy sharing the gardens with guests, but the increase in traffic also increases maintenance, landscaping needs, and operational costs. The small admission fee helps us maintain the property and continue offering access to visitors.

Are photographers allowed at Hamstra Gardens?

Yes. Photographers are welcome to use the gardens for sessions.

Because photography sessions are typically paid services offered to clients, a photography fee applies. This is standard practice at many photography venues and private properties.

Photographers also have the option to purchase a season photography pass, which allows them to use the gardens throughout the season.

Why is there a photography fee?

Photography sessions typically involve commercial or paid services. Because the gardens are being used as a venue for business activity, the photography fee helps offset the additional wear, coordination, and maintenance required for these sessions.

Charging a photography fee is a common practice at private venues and helps us continue to maintain the property while allowing photographers to use the space professionally.

Can I take my own photos without hiring a photographer?

Yes. Guests are welcome to take personal photos during their visit as part of their regular admission.

However, professional photography sessions or sessions involving hired photographers require a photography session reservation and fee.

Do guests have a time limit for their visit?

Guests are welcome to enjoy the property during operating hours, but all visitors must depart by the posted closing time for the day.  We ask that all guests are respectful of the property and its residents.  While there is not a time limit we ask that guests are mindful that the property is a private residence and depart when appropriate.  The intent for public viewing is guests are encouraged to walk the grounds to view the property at their leisure.  The property is not intended to be used as a public park with unlimited access and use.

What amenities are available at the gardens?

Hamstra Gardens is located on a private residence and does not operate like a traditional public park or venue.

Because of this, amenities are limited.

Available amenities include:

  • Portable restrooms located on the property

Please note that there are no food services or permanent restroom facilities available.

How do I enter the property when I arrive?

Parking is on the west side of the property.  There is a large grass field for guests to park.  Signage will direct visitors where to park and enter the gardens.

On busier days, especially during peak spring weekends, parking attendants may be present to help guide guests and manage traffic flow.

Do I need to register before visiting?

Yes. All guests must register before visiting the gardens.

Registration helps us manage visitor flow, improve the experience for guests, and maintain safety on the property.

Is Hamstra Gardens a public park?

No. Hamstra Gardens is a private residence.

The property is graciously shared with visitors, but it is not a public park or municipal facility. We ask all guests to respect the property and help us preserve the gardens for future visitors.

Why are there limits or changes being made to visits?

Visitor demand has grown significantly over the years. With increased traffic comes increased wear on the gardens and added safety considerations.

Our goal is not to limit access, but rather to create a better overall experience for guests while protecting and maintaining the gardens for years to come.

Can the schedule or availability change?

Yes. Because the gardens are located on a private residence and events may occur throughout the season, hours and availability may occasionally change. Please check our website or social media pages for the most current information.

When does the garden close for the season?

Typically Hamstra Gardens closes for the season around the end of October, weather permitting.  The closing dates will be posted on the website and social media.

Can I bring my pet?

For the safety of all guests pets are not allowed on the property.

What about Weddings?

No weddings are scheduled at Hamstra Gardens for the 2026 season.  We are considering adding potential uses for events and weddings in the 2027 season.  We will announce any changes on social media and the website.  Please email with any inquiries or questions.
